I began sewing in 2017 in a failed attempt to impress a woman. She appreciated my burgeoning skills with Sharps needle and cotton thread, but as a accomplished sewist, she cared not a whit to share that domain with me.
From that first project, a cotton sofa pillow cover sewn by hand with a backstitch, I have sewn and gifted 150+ items from the UpState of SC to Barrow, AK, on the Arctic Ocean.
Since the pillow cover, I have sewn shopping totes, napkins, place mats, bodices, skirts, dresses, bowl cozies(by the bushel), quilts, knit knickers, a bralette, and odds and ends. My favorites are cotton baby bonnets, cotton baby booties with the USMC emblem pattern, and a surgical scrub cap from a Tula Pink fabric. Soon, I will repair a boat cover.
Cover Story. Women are generally surprised I sew, but accepting. A group of local quilters accepted me into their group, and I have been sewing with them weekly for about 3 years. Guys, generally, are polite but uninterested that I sew. My cover story is that, when the allure of biker bars and biker babes approaches overwhelming, I sew, keeping me out of trouble and out of jail.
Pricing for my Sewn Items.Pricing for my sewn items is based on $15/hour plus fabrics, supplies, and consideration for equipment depreciation. If you think this is excessive, don’t purchase.
Patterns. The patterns and fabrics belonged to the Mom of a friend. The patterns are removed from the envelope, instructions assessed for being complete, and the pattern pieces matched with the instructions to verify they are all there.
Fabrics. Some of the fabrics may be decades old and stored for the duration of ownership. They were stored in bags, boxes, and containers above and in the basement. They have not been washed, but have passed the “snift” test. Not like new fabrics, and they will need to be washed. But acceptable. I attempt to note and disclose stained/soiled areas. I apologize for any soiled areas missed. Fabrics are identified as cotton, linen, or other (polyester mostly). If misidentified, apologies.
Pricing Patterns and Fabrics. Garment patterns are $10/ea, craft patterns $10/ea. or less. Fabrics $5/yd, fat quarters $10/bundle of 6.
