A plastic pencil box is being re-purposed as a health and first aid box to be carried in my tote. A gallon ziplock bag was used to store tooth brush, tooth paste, and flossers, but there was excess bag length which caused excess plastic to be stored in the box. The solution was to remove much of the length of the ziplock bag. The excess was removed by cutting the excess length off with a rotary cutter and to hem the bag. Hemming the bag was the same process used to hem cotton baby blankets and cotton table napkins.
The full bag was secured to the cutting mat w/ fender washers and cut with a rotary cutter. After cutting, a 5 lb weight secured the bag as the cut was folded over 1/2″ 2X and clipped. The folds were stitched 2X, 3mm stitch length, approximately 1/16″ from the edges of the fold. The hem may not hold water, but it is very secure.
This project was not glamorous, but has great utility. The reduced bag, holding oral hygiene items, fits nicely into the pencil box along w/ first aid products.
